چکیده

In this proceedings we summarize our recent letter (Jarvis & McLure 2002) where we suggested that by correcting for the inevitable effects of inclination, the black-hole masses of flat-spectrum quasars (FSQ) with intrinsically powerful radio jets are confined, virtually exclusively, to MBH > 108 M⊙. After considering realistic Doppler boosting factors, many of the FSQ would be more accurately classified as radio-intermediate or radio-quiet quasars. This range in radio luminosity suggests that the FSQ are fully consistent with an upper boundary on radio power of the form L5GHz ∝ M2.5 BH.

On the Bl Lacertae Objects/radio Quasars and the Fri/ii Dichotomy

In the frame of unification schemes for radio-loud active galactic nuclei (AGNs), FR I radio galaxies are believed to be BL Lacertae (BL Lac) objects with the relativistic jet misaligned to our line of sight, and FR II radio galaxies correspond to misaligned radio quasars. The Ledlow-Owen dividing line for FR I/FR II dichotomy in the optical absolute magnitude of host galaxy–radio luminosity (M...

MBH - σ relation in SDSS flat-spectrum radio quasars

The relationship between the black hole mass and velocity dispersion indicated with [O III] line width is investigated for a sample of 87 flat-spectrum radio quasars (FSRQs) selected from SDSS DR3 quasar catalogue. We found the Mbh − σ[OIII] relation is deviated from Tremaine et al. relation for nearby inactive galaxies, with a larger black hole mass at given velocity dispersion. There is no st...

On the black-hole mass – radio luminosity relation for flat-spectrum radio-loud quasars

A new analysis of the connection between black-hole mass and radio luminosity in radioselected flat-spectrum quasars (FSQ) is presented. In contrast to recent claims in the literature, we find no evidence that the black-hole masses of radio-selected FSQ are systematically lower that those of luminous optically-selected radio-loud quasars. The black-hole masses of the FSQ are estimated via the v...

The radio luminosity, black hole mass and Eddington ratio for quasars from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey

We investigate the MBH−σ∗ relation for radio-loud quasars with redshift z < 0.83 in Data Release 3 of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS). The sample consists of 3772 quasars with better model of Hβ and [O III] lines and available radio luminosity, including 306 radio-loud quasars, 3466 radio-quiet quasars with measured radio luminosity or upper-limit of radio luminosity (181 radio-quiet quasar...

The distance scale and Eddington efficiency of luminous quasars

The relation between the central mass and quasar luminosity (MBH ∝ L α FHWM ) links a given Eddington ratio with a value of H0, within a cosmology with fixed (Ωm,ΩΛ). We point out that because the relation is calibrated at low z using distance independent reverberation mapping to get the BLR size, the derived MBH interestingly does not depend on H0, while L/LEdd is sensitive to H0, but rather r...
